Pick up at three (3) different locations in the Toronto area: Pape & Cosburn, Bathurst st. & Wilson Ave., and Square One Mississauga.

Leave Toronto for apple picking, then St. Jacob's market, then Elora Gorge and in late afternoon a visit to the Our Lady Immaculate Basilica before going back to Toronto.

There's something magical about escaping the city for a single day - filling it with markets, orchards, trails, and even a quiet Mass in a historic church. That's exactly what we planned for Saturday, September 20, 2025: a trip that takes you from the hustle of Toronto to the heart of Ontario countryside.

Morning: The Orchard Awakens

We start early. By 8:30 AM, the bus pulls away from Toronto and heads toward Downey's Big Apple Farm in Maryhill. The drive is just an hour - enough time to chat with seatmates or sip a coffee before the countryside rolls into view.

Downey's is known for its apple orchards, farm store, and simple charm. The orchard gates open at 10:00 AM, so we arrive just in time to be among the first in the rows. Families grab 10-lb or 20-lb bags, eager to pick fresh apples right from the trees.

Apple picking is more than filling a bag. It's about laughter when an apple slips from your hand, the crisp bite of a sample, and the simple joy of knowing your fruit came straight from the branch.

Midday: Market Treasures

By late morning, it's time to head north - just 20 minutes away - to the legendary St. Jacobs Farmers' Market.

This market isn't just a row of stalls. It's a piece of Ontario history. Since 1975, farmers and artisans have gathered here, creating what has grown into the largest year-round farmers' market in Canada. About a million visitors wander through every year, and you quickly see why.

Here you'll find fresh produce piled high, sizzling food stands offering everything from Mennonite sausage to butter tarts, and handmade crafts. If you're hungry, this is the place for lunch. The air smells of roasted nuts, smoked meats, and sweet baked goods.

Afternoon: The Gorge Adventure

After a hearty meal, the bus takes a short 30-minute ride to Elora Gorge Conservation Area.

Elora Gorge feels like stepping into another world. The Grand River cuts through steep limestone cliffs, some rising more than 20 meters high. Trails wind along the edges, giving safe but thrilling views into the gorge below. You'll hear the rush of water, spot anglers waiting for trout, and maybe even catch a glimpse of kayakers braving the rapids.

For nearly three hours, there's time to hike, rest, and enjoy the outdoors. It's the kind of place where cameras click constantly, but the real memory is in the stillness of standing at the lookout and just watching nature's work.

Evening: History & Faith

At 4:15 PM, we leave the gorge and make our way to Guelph, where towers rise in the distance. By late afternoon, the bus pulls up at the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate.

This Gothic Revival church is a landmark. Built in the late 1800s, its stone walls and stained glass windows make it one of the most beautiful churches in Canada. Travel writers often call it "Guelph's crown jewel."

We're here not just to admire, but to worship. At 5:15 PM, the Mass begins. For an hour, the church fills with hymns and prayer. Travelers sit quietly in pews, grateful for the pause after a full day of walking and discovery.

At 6:30 PM, we step back onto the bus, the sun setting as Toronto calls us home. By 8:00-8:30 PM, we're back at our drop-off points - tired, maybe, but smiling.
